The N.C. Division of Employment Security (DES) pays people unemployment benefits by direct deposit or debit card. You will choose your payment method preference when you apply for unemployment.  

Change your payment preference anytime by logging in to your MyNCUIBenefits account and clicking Change Personal Information.

Direct Deposit

To get your unemployment benefits by direct deposit, you must have a checking or savings account.

Debit Card

DES will automatically load your unemployment benefits onto a Visa® or Mastercard® prepaid debit card from U.S. Bank. You can use this card to make purchases, pay bills, or withdraw cash. Visit usbankreliacard.com to learn more about the ReliaCard program.
