DES Working to Immediately Expand Capacity in Response to Surge in COVID-19 Unemployment Claims

The North Carolina Division of Employment Security is taking immediate actions to help people who are unable to work because of COVID-19. Approximately 370,000 North Carolinians have filed for unemployment insurance assistance since March 16, an unprecedented spike in filings as a result of the pandemic. Prior to COVID-19, DES received about 3,000 claims a week.

Seven More Counties in North Carolina Approved for Disaster Unemployment Assistance

Anson County, Carteret County, Chatham County, Northampton County, Perquimans County, Richmond County, and Scotland County have been approved for Disaster Unemployment Assistance.

One More County in North Carolina Approved for Disaster Unemployment Assistance

Hertford County has been approved for Disaster Unemployment Assistance.

Two More Counties in North Carolina Approved for Disaster Unemployment Assistance

Brunswick County and Halifax County have been approved for Disaster Unemployment Assistance.
