Unemployment insurance information is usually confidential, but it may be shared in some situations. The N.C. Division of Employment Security (DES) can release information when the requirements of N.C. Gen. Stat. § 96-4(x), Title 4, Subchapter 24A, Sections .0200 and .0500 of the North Carolina Administrative Code, and 20 C.F.R. Part 603 are met.
Subject to N.C. Gen. Stat. § 96-4(x), and only in certain situations, DES may share the following types of information:
- Names and addresses
- Social Security numbers
- Employer identification numbers
- Wage history
- Claims for unemployment benefits
- Quarterly wage/tax reports
- Benefit payment details
- Other information permitted under the Employment Security Law
How to Request Information
To request information, you must send a written request that includes the following details:
- What information you want.
- The date (or approximate date) the record was made.
- Who created the record.
- The full name of the person making the request.
- The address of the person making the request.
- Date of birth.
- The last four digits of the Social Security number, claimant identification number or account number for the records requested.
- Why you need the information and how you plan to use it.
- How you want to get the information.
NOTE: DES will not send requested information or documents to a third party unless the request meets all legal rules. DES does not send information or documents by email. For W6 requests, the full Social Security number is required and responses to W6 requests will be mailed.
